London to Grenada: Gatwick, Heathrow and Flying From Europe

How to fly to Grenada from the UK and Europe: British Airways from Gatwick, Virgin Atlantic from Heathrow, seasonal Frankfurt flights and smart connections.

Grenada is one of the few small Eastern Caribbean islands with scheduled long-haul flights straight from London. British Airways flies from Gatwick and Virgin Atlantic from Heathrow, each a few times a week, and that alone shapes how most British visitors plan: the days of the week are fixed by the airline, not by you.

From continental Europe the picture is thinner. There has been a seasonal German link in recent winters, but most travellers connect through London, through a Caribbean hub such as Barbados, or through the United States. Each option has a catch, and the US route in particular has paperwork that surprises people who are only changing planes.

The two London services

British Airways operates from London Gatwick, typically three times a week. Virgin Atlantic flies from London Heathrow, typically twice a week. Both use wide-body aircraft and both take around nine to ten hours southbound. Because the departure days rarely line up neatly, many travellers pick the airline whose days suit their accommodation booking and then choose the airport.

Not every rotation is a pure non-stop. Long-haul flights to the smaller islands are often scheduled as a triangle, with the aircraft calling at another island such as St Lucia or Barbados on the way out or back. Passengers for Grenada usually stay on board during the stop, but it adds an hour or more. Read the flight details before booking, and if a non-stop matters, compare the two directions, since the stop is not always on both legs.

Both airlines sell flight-and-hotel packages through their holiday arms, and tour operators also hold seats. In peak weeks it can be easier to find availability as part of a package than as a flight-only fare.

From Germany and the rest of Europe

Condor has flown a weekly winter-season service from Frankfurt in recent years, generally between November and spring. It is the only scheduled link from continental Europe that has operated without a change of plane, and it is announced season by season, so check whether it is running for your dates.

German, Austrian and Swiss travellers who prefer a single booking often fly into London and pick up one of the two British services there. Check which London airport each leg uses before paying, because an arrival at Heathrow and a departure from Gatwick means a cross-London transfer. A ticketing agent or the airline can tell you which combinations can be issued on one booking.

Otherwise, travellers from France, the Netherlands, Scandinavia, Italy or Switzerland generally fly to London and connect, or fly to Barbados and take a short regional flight on. Flying into Barbados opens up more departure days because Barbados has daily services from London and frequent links from elsewhere in Europe, and the onward hop to Grenada takes under an hour. The disadvantage is the extra connection and, often, a separate ticket for the final leg.

Connecting through a US hub such as Miami or New York works on the map but is the most bureaucratic route for Europeans, for the reason explained below.

Connections that work, and the ones that bite

Through London on one ticket. Flying a European short-haul into Heathrow or Gatwick on the same booking as the Grenada flight is the safest option, because a missed connection becomes the airline's problem. Self-connecting between Heathrow and Gatwick on separate tickets needs at least half a day of margin.

Through Barbados. Barbados has more long-haul frequencies than Grenada. Caribbean Airlines and interCaribbean Airways fly between Barbados and Grenada, and Virgin Atlantic and British Airways have also linked the two. If your Barbados arrival and Grenada departure are on different tickets, you must clear Barbados immigration, collect bags and check in again.

Through the United States. Even a two-hour connection in Miami or New York requires full entry into the US. Most European passport holders need an approved ESTA before they board, and some nationalities need a full US visa. Many travellers do not realise this until check-in.

Through Trinidad. Caribbean Airlines links Port of Spain with Grenada several times a day. This suits people combining a stay in Trinidad and Tobago, less so as a pure transfer.

Time, jet lag and arrival day

Grenada is on Atlantic Standard Time all year, four hours behind GMT. During British Summer Time it is five hours behind London, during winter four. There is no daylight saving on the island, so the gap changes when the UK clocks change at the end of March and October.

Flights from London leave in the morning or around midday and land in Grenada in the afternoon local time, which suits most people: a short evening, an early night and a morning that feels normal. The return flights cross overnight and land in London early the next morning, so plan a quiet day after you get home.

If you are travelling with a lot of luggage, a dive kit or golf clubs, check each airline's baggage policy for leisure routes. Long-haul economy allowances are generally generous, but if you add a regional hop through Barbados or St Vincent, the small regional carrier may allow less, and excess charges apply on that leg.

What to check before you book

Entry rules for your passport. UK, Irish and most EU and Schengen-area citizens can visit Grenada without a visa. A passport valid for the whole stay, with six months recommended, and proof of onward travel are expected.

The stop, if there is one. A routing via St Lucia or Barbados is not a problem, but it changes your arrival time and occasionally your connection plans.

Peak weeks. Christmas, New Year, February half-term, Easter and the August Carnival period are the tightest. Seats on the two London services go early in those weeks.

Who handles a delay. A single ticket keeps you protected end to end. If you build your own itinerary from separate bookings, insure it and leave buffer days.

Your onward plans to Carriacou. Carriacou has no long-haul service. Allow for a domestic flight or the ferry from St George's after you land on the main island.

Travel insurance and documents. Health care in Grenada is adequate for routine problems, but serious cases may require evacuation to Barbados, Trinidad or further, which is expensive. A policy that includes medical evacuation is a sensible part of the booking, not an afterthought.

Fares, seasons and booking from Europe

Long-haul fares to Grenada follow the European school calendar as much as the Caribbean weather. The highest prices fall over Christmas and New Year, the February half-term week, Easter and the summer holidays, when families travel and the August Carnival brings Grenadians living in Britain home. The cheapest windows are usually late April to early July and September to early December, the latter overlapping with hurricane season.

Because the two London services fly only a few days a week, sold-out flights are common in peak weeks, and alternatives through Barbados quickly become expensive as well. Booking four to eight months out for winter is not unusual. Frequent-flyer points can be useful on these routes, but award seats in peak weeks are scarce and taxes and carrier charges on long-haul redemptions from London can be substantial.

Travellers from Ireland, Scotland and northern England generally connect through London on a single ticket. Check that the domestic or short-haul leg arrives at the right London airport, since a Gatwick departure after a Heathrow arrival means a transfer of at least an hour and a half by road and a separate check-in.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a direct flight from the UK to Grenada?

Yes. British Airways flies from London Gatwick and Virgin Atlantic from London Heathrow, each a few times a week. Some rotations call at another Caribbean island on the way, so check whether your chosen flight is a true non-stop or includes a short ground stop.

How long is the flight from London to Grenada?

Roughly nine to ten hours non-stop, longer if the flight calls at St Lucia or Barbados. The return is usually a little shorter thanks to tailwinds, and it often operates overnight, arriving in London early in the morning.

Can you fly to Grenada from Germany without changing planes?

Condor has run a weekly seasonal service from Frankfurt in recent winters. It is published season by season, so confirm it is operating before planning around it. Outside that window, connect via London, Barbados or a North American hub.

Is an ESTA needed to connect through Miami to Grenada?

If your passport is from a Visa Waiver Program country, yes. The US has no airside transit, so every connecting passenger is admitted to the US first. Apply well before travelling; without approval the airline will refuse boarding.

What is the time difference between Grenada and the UK?

Grenada is four hours behind the UK in the northern winter and five hours behind during British Summer Time. The island does not use daylight saving time, so the difference changes only when British clocks change.
